Lionel Fogarty's work as an activist, poet and artist over the past forty years has received limited formal recognition despite his prolific contribution to Australian literature and politics. A member of the Yugambeh and Kudjela nations of south-east and north Queensland respectively, Fogarty has devoted a lifetime to his craft as a poet and continues to work with a commitment to justice for all people as well as a belief in the communicative potential of poetry. As a contemporary songman Fogarty's role is as necessary today as it was during the corrupt Bjelke-Petersen Queensland State Government of the 70s and 80s. He continues to write polifically and shares freely with all readers. A superb performance poet, Fogarty has continued, where opportunities present, to recite his poetry at literary festivals, national and international, and lecture to a new generation of university students. (re.press, 2017)

Captured from a larger painted work, making this screen print has offered time to reflect on Lionel's living practice, his living words. The poem can now move with the wearer, starting conversations and being read in snippets by strangers. Enjoy listening to his beautiful brutal glimmer. It is like a river.

Thanks to Lionel for asking me to make this garment. To Damian and Charlie for their support and to Josh for wearing it in a large so well.
All profits go to the artist for this one.
